Finding Peace in Crochet: A Personal Journey

Crochet has always been more than a hobby for me — it’s been a lifeline. As someone who’s AuDHD (autistic and ADHD), I live with anxiety and depression. My brain is often a whirlwind of thoughts, emotions, and sensory overloads. Crochet gave me something I didn’t even realize I was missing. It provided a safe space to slow down. It allowed me to express myself and find peace in the rhythm of creation.

A Tangled Mind Meets Tangled Yarn

There are days when focusing feels impossible. Every sound feels too loud. My emotions feel like a tangled ball of yarn. But when I pick up my hook, everything shifts. The repetitive motion gives my mind a place to rest. The gentle texture of the yarn calms me. The quiet rhythm of each stitch brings peace.

Crochet offers structure — something clear and predictable in a world that often feels chaotic. It lets me create order, beauty, and calm one loop at a time.

The Therapy Hidden in Stitches

Crochet isn’t a cure, but it’s a powerful form of self-care it allows me to:

  • Regulate my emotions through tactile and rhythmic movement
  • Hyperfocus in a way that feels rewarding instead of draining
  • Express creativity without pressure or perfectionism
  • Reconnect with myself when words are hard to find

When my anxiety peaks or depression tries to pull me under, crochet becomes my gentle anchor. It is something I can hold and something that responds to my hands. It reminds me I can still create even when I feel stuck.

Building Something Beyond Myself

Threads of Yesternight was born out of this very healing process. It started as my personal outlet. It was a way to ground myself. It then evolved into a space where I share that same comfort with others. Every pattern I design carries a piece of that intention: calm, creativity, and connection.

Creating something from yarn is a mindful act. Watching it come to life, stitch by stitch, reminds me of a valuable lesson. Progress doesn’t have to be fast to be meaningful. Healing, like crochet, is built one small loop at a time.

A Message to Fellow Neurospicy Makers

If you’re reading this and you’ve ever felt “too much” or “not enough,” you’re not alone. If you’ve ever felt simply exhausted by the noise of the world, you’re not alone. Crochet doesn’t fix everything, but it helps. It gives your hands something to do while your heart catches up. It lets you breathe.

So pick up your hook, grab your yarn, and make something — anything. Let it be imperfect. Let it be yours. Because sometimes, the simple act of creating is the most powerful healing there is.

Closing Note

Crochet is my art, my therapy, and my quiet rebellion against burnout and chaos. It’s how I take care of myself. It’s also how I share love with the world, one stitch at a time.

If my story resonates with you, I’d love for you to join the Yesternight Community. It is a cozy space for makers. These makers create not just for fun, but for peace.
